  8.      Ma Yuan, a native of 
  9. Hochung, later lived at 
  10. Ch'ien-t'ang (Hangchow).  
  11. Here the withered reeds, 
  12. bamboos and ripples on the 
  13. water are painted with a 
  14. trembling brush.  The color 
  15. wash is highly effective, 
  16. and the painting is suffused 
  17. with a solemn stillness that 
  18. captures the attention.
